In 1897, the North Carolina Geological Survey reported that a belt less than a quarter mile wide on Vein Mountain contained as many as 33 parallel auriferous quartz veins.

Early USGS geologists observed that many smaller veins ran parallel to the larger ones and were literally innumerable, while the principal Nichols vein varied in width from a few inches to three feet. Few documented sites in the Carolina Gold Belt showed such a dense concentration of mineralized veins.
